In 1965, thirty swimmers met at Roseville High School Pool and began the first competitive swim program in Roseville.
Under the direction of its first coach, Chris King, the team swam its one meet that season against Sunset Whitney.
In 1966, the Roseville Team joined the Valley Foothill-Mountain Swim League and participated in the Mountain Division.
Bob Jellison was added to the coaching staff; and, by the end of the season, the team grew to over eighty members.
In 1967, the team adopted the "SUGARBEARS" as the team mascot and team name.
In 1970, the Roseville Team won the Mountain Division Championship, and subsequently moved up to the current Valley-Foothill Division in 1971.
During the years 1971 to present, the team participated successfully in the Valley-Foothill Competitive Aquatics League (VFCAL) under many outstanding coaches.
Past Head Coaches have included Scott O'Connor, Scott Winters and Cindy Conidaris.
In 1976, the team moved from Roseville High School to the newly built Oakmont Pool Complex.
Coupled with success has been tragedy. In 1975, an outstanding swimmer and team leader from Roseville, Paul Clotfelter, died in his prime due to a terminal disease.
Each year, the team honors an outstanding member of the Roseville Swim Team who epitomizes all that is good and outstanding as an athlete and as an individual.
This award bears the name the "PAUL CLOTFELTER MEMORIAL AWARD", and is truly special to receivers.
In 1980 and 1981, under the leadership of Head Coach John Bolce, the Roseville Swim Team finished second in the Valley-Foothill Competitive Aquatics League.
In 1982 and 1983, the Roseville Sugarbears captured back to back Dual Meet and League Championship titles.
The team easily "chewed-up" all other six teams in the league.
In 1984, the team finished in first place in the Dual Meet Championship season by going undefeated.
In 1985, the team finished 2nd in the Dual Meet season.
The Sugarbears placed third in Championships in 1986 and from 1987 to 2000 the team was both dual meet and league Champions, under the guidance of Head Coach John MacLeane.
In 1998. John MacLeane resigned as the Head Coach and his brother and long-time Sugarbear coach, Joe MacLeane took over the Sugarbear dynasty until 2001.
John Sherman took over the Head Coaching position of the Sugarbears from 2001 to 2004, capturing the VFCAL
league championship in his final year.
2005 marked a new era for the Roseville Sugarbears, as
the aquatic legacy continued under the stewardship of
Head Coach Megan Henry and transitioned to Jordan Haley as the Head Coach in 2007. The City of Roseville,
Parents Board and Coaching Staff look forward to
working together and maintaining this great program.
Much of the success of the Roseville Swim Team can be
attributed to the enthusiasm and team spirit of the
coaches, swimmers and team parents. Thousands of hours
spent by these dedicated people have contributed
immensely to the quality of the Roseville Swim
Program.
